Description
  • The Carl Schmidt Sohn brand since 1829
  • A brand that began its business manufacturing swords.
  • The city of Solingen lies on the Wupper River, 30 km northeast of Cologne, and was founded in 1374. The city, with a population of 120,000, is known today for its expertise in blade making and has been home to the Carl Schmidt Sohn brand since 1829.
  • The presence of iron ore near Cologne (Germany's richest trading center) led to Solingen quickly becoming a center of metalworking. High-quality sword blades were produced here in the 14th century, and Solingen was contracted to sell all its swords and weapons in Cologne, where the hilts and finished weapons were attached. From the late 14th and early 15th centuries, forges flourished around Solingen, further solidifying its reputation as a smithing center in Northern Europe. Solingen swords appeared in various locations, including the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the British Isles. Northern Europe valued the quality of weapons manufactured in Solingen, and they were sold throughout the European continent. Napoleon, who briefly ruled Solingen until his abdication in 1815 after the Battle of Waterloo, abolished the monopolies of the craft guilds. The sword and cutlery industry in Solingen grew rapidly, despite being blocked by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte of France. Carl Schmidt & Son began producing sabers in 1829. By 1830, production had reached up to 2,000 swords per week, and he employed over 100 smiths, grinders, and laborers. As Germany rapidly became a major center for the manufacture of industrial tools, Carl Schmidt & Son also began producing knives, cutlery, razor blades, scissors, and pocketknives in 1869. With increasing demand for knives from abroad, Carl Schmidt & Son began to increase production of knives and decrease production of scissors and razors. Since the beginning of the century, most of Carl Schmidt Sohn's knives have been exported throughout Europe. Since then, Carl Schmidt Sohn has been known for its outstanding achievements in the production of high-quality knives and cutlery, based on a long history of production in the city of Solingen. Even today, Solingen remains the knife-making center of Germany, where around 90% of German knives are manufactured. As early as 1928, the famous knife lines such as "Continental," "Solingia," and "La Casita" were sold with great success throughout Europe. Founded in 1829, the company has been dedicated to the development and production of knives for more than 180 years, continuously improving the combination of form and function.
